Brian Dowdall Municipal Election Candidate Profile
Name: Brian Dowdall
Position Sought: Councillor
Currently Retired or Working (where?): I currently do contract work related to data entry. (high tech).
Former Elected Positions/Terms if applicable: Beckwith councillor – 2014.
Community volunteer experience (service clubs, local committees, fundraising, etc): Canadian Cancer Society, former board member of the Perth Fair Board, former CPDMH board director.
Top 3 issues facing your municipality and its residents that council has control or major influence over: I do not like to look at them as issues but, priorities. Taxes, secondary roads and making sure that our volunteer Fire Department has access to continued training and adequate equipment.
Your solutions/approach to those 3 issues:
Taxes: Our level of development, lot development fees (on new homes), gas tax revenue and overall financial management has kept our tax increases to an acceptable level. When projects are planned, we must look at the overall affect on the tax bill. We must also look at increasing our commercial tax base.
Secondary Roads: We have a Gravel Road Program in place. We need to continue to upgrade these roads as development has resulted in more traffic. Some may be hard topped or simply built up, ditched etc. Lot development fees, gas taxes and road improvement budgeting are ways to achieve such works.
Fire Department: Provide the budgeting for training (as we do now) and review the equipment renewal plan. Take advantage of any available programs and monies for the above. An overall annual review to make sure the monies are sufficient to meet these goals. My Motto:”The resident is the employer, the elected politician is the employee”.
Do you own (or have a stake in) or operate a commercial/industrial business in your municipality? (Including vacant development lands or rental units): Janet and I reside and own our home in Beckwith Township.
