Councillor Jim Graff suggested beet juice was the to way to go for Perth when it comes to a salt management plan. His own research, he said, shows some municipalities that have used a beet juice component have reduced their road salt use by 30 per cent.

Grant Machan, director of environmental services, explained the town does use salt with a beet component. Glad to hear it,Councillor Graff chuckled.

Environmental services has devised a salt management plan to protect the environment from the negative impacts of road salts.A motion was passed at Committee of the Whole Jan.17 to establish a salt management plan policythat will provide guidance on industry best practices for the storage and application of road salt to provide safe, efficient and cost effective transportation systems, and shall contain practices to protect the environment from the negative impacts of road salts.
