It’s hard to keep a secret in a town the size of Smiths Falls and the word is out that County Fair Mall is closing.  It is not official though, and the town has not yet received any correspondence or indication to that effect from RioCan Canada’s largest Real Estate Investment Trust, which manages the mall.

“We’ve put in several call to RIoCan but haven’t heard back from them,” said Malcolm Morris Smiths Falls CAO.

According to Morris the town has been working with RioCan to try and come up with a solution since the beginning of the year.

“We offered to help develop the site and find tenants, and we explored different possibilities so it came as a bit of a surprise when we heard there were going to be changes,” said Morris.

The town was willing to partner with RioCan according to staff and has been blindsided by this latest development.

“We’ve tried to reach out, but have yet to hear a response,” said Shawn Pankow, mayor of Smiths Falls.
