An application for funding to reconstruct Lorne Street in Smiths Falls failed to secure approval. The joint provincial and federal Small Communities Fund was inundated with applications with a total value that exceeded the funding envelope.

“We weren’t the only community that didn’t get funding,” said Malcolm Morris, Smiths Falls CAO.
The fund allowed municipalities to apply for two thirds of a project cost. The Lorne Street reconstruction project, which includes water and sewage infrastructure, repaving and sidewalks is estimated at $1.5 million. The town applied for $500,000 from each of the funding bodies and would have then paid the remaining $500,000.

“We will of course do an investigation to understand why we did not secure the funding, and in the meantime we’ll be looking to identify other funding programs that might be more appropriate for the work,” said Morris.
