Ontario Minimum Wage Increases for October 1, 2016
Ontario is increasing minimum wage rates – the lowest rate that can be paid by employers to employees.
Between 1996 and 2003, the general minimum wage in Ontario was frozen at $6.85/hr., but increased annually between 2004 and 2010, and again in 2014 and 2015. Previous to today’s announcement, the most recent increase took the general minimum wage from $11/hr. to $11.25/hr. That increase was the result of the Stronger Workplaces for a Stronger Economy Act – passed November 2014 – that tied changes to the minimum wage to the Ontario Consumer Price Index.
