Even Shawn Pankow, mayor-elect, wanted to get home shortly following Smiths Falls results just after midnight October 22.
He spoke briefly to the greatly reduced — but still enthusiastic — numbers at the Memorial Centre.
“I’m very excited about the council you’ve elected. There’s both experience and youth, and a very bright group.”
He added that Smiths Falls is going through growth it’s never gone through before and that this new council “will lead us into positivity, change and progress.” He said good-bye to outgoing councillors Joe Gallipeau, John Maloney and Dawn Quinn and thanked them sincerely for their “commitment and hard work to make this community better for everybody.”
Joe Gallipeau congratulated Pankow on a “hard fight” with best wishes over the next four years. He thanked his family and staff.
“It’s obvious who the voters wanted to be mayor,” he added, and said, with some sadness, perhaps, and a bit tongue in cheek “…at the end of the day I’ll have a little less to do and retire a little sooner.”
