The Town of Smiths Falls has officially appointed Lieutenant Randy Normandin as acting fire chief.

At a Nov. 20 council meeting, councillors approved a bylaw naming Normandin as temporary replacement for Fire Chief Normand Beauchamp, who announced on Sept. 18 that he would be leaving for new employment. He has since been appointed fire chief of the City of Timmins.

Normandin was named the Smiths Falls Fire Department’s fire prevention officer in 2014. He has been a full-time fire firefighter since 1994 after more than a decade as a volunteer.

“The assignment (as acting chief) will start right away,” Smiths Falls Chief Administrative Officer Malcolm Morris advised council. “There will be no ending date, but we expect it will be several months.”
