On Sunday, May 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. St. Francis de Sales School on Elmsley Street in Smiths Falls, will be opening its doors to the community for a final walk down memory lane and a celebration of the facility’s over 100 years of service.

“We hope to see a lot of you this Sunday,” added Theresa Lalonde Pankow, principal at St. Francis de Sales school. “We’re not sure what’s going to happen with the building, so it will be nice to invite people to walk through one more time.”

She was speaking at a April 30 public meeting on the new St. Francis de Sales School to be on Ross Street this September.

Before the grand opening for the new education hub begins our thoughts will go back to the past this Sunday when we say farewell to the Elmsley Street facility. This final event will close the 104 year history St. Francis de Sales School has cultivated on Elmsley Street in preparation for this Fall’s move to Ross Street. The event will feature a number of artifacts that staff has discovered through their cleaning out process, including a First Communion group picture complete with nuns in their habits.

Lalonde Pankow knows first-hand the generational connection that many Smiths Falls families have to St. Francis as her husband and father-in-law both attended the school when they were boys. Members of the community will be welcome to walk into the classrooms, hallways and common areas of the school one more time to reminisce and take pictures.

The school is finishing its 2017-2018 year at their Elmsley Street location, but must vacate the property by July 6 following the end of the school year on the June 28 PD Day. Staff plan to begin the packing process following this weekend’s open house so that they are ready to leave in early July. While wall items and other passive pieces of school property will start to be removed in the coming days, Lalonde Pankow assures parents that staff is making every effort to maintain a level of normalcy for the students until the final bell rings at the end of June.

The community celebration for St. Francis de Sales School begins following mass this Sunday, May 6, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All are welcome to join in.
