Local Government week is fast approaching and the town is looking to fill two positions for student councilors.  Notices have gone out to Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI) and St. John Catholic High School in Perth seeking students who would be interested in serving as student councilors on Smiths Falls council.

“To be eligible they have to be Smiths Falls residents and they have to write a 250-word essay expressing why they would like to serve,” said Nadine Bennet, Smiths Falls deputy clerk.

In 2013 Smiths Falls held the local government week’s council meeting at SFDCI in front of students and staff and it was very well received. The staff is recommending that council consider a repeat, and hold the Oct. 17 council or committee of the whole meeting at the high school.

“It would still be open to the public, and we will make arrangements with the school regarding security,” said Bennet.

Council members were very receptive to the suggestion and will be holding their regular meeting at 12:30 on Monday, Oct. 17 at SFDCI.
