For theatre goers, one-act plays are rare, tantalizing theatrical delicacies. In a cluster of two or more, one-acts provide an enticing assortment of dramatic experiences in a single evening.

That’s the idea behind An Evening of One-Act Plays, opening October 24th at the Studio Theatre in Perth. It’s also a preview of an exciting event coming to town. More about that in a minute…

The first one-act in An Evening of One-Act Plays is Linda McCready’s drama Mr. Philbin, about an aging artist whose arthritic hands can no longer hold a brush. With the help of a support worker, Larry Philbin rediscovers the value of family and his art. Mr. Philbin is directed by Annie West, and stars Grey Masson, Garrett Pipher, and Grace Poltrack.

The second play is Patricia Clapp’s A Candle On The Table, a poignant drama about three elderly women sharing memories — some happy, some sad, some bittersweet — on their first day together in a senior citizens’ home. A Candle On The Table is directed by Adam Pelletier, and stars Janet Rice, Danielle Turner, Joanna McCauley Treffers, and Juli Heney.

Finally, P. David Temple’s Trade Secrets is a very brief, very funny romantic comedy that revolves around a conversation between about a Master Baker and a Muffin Maker. Throughout, unintentional sexual innuendoes hint at the intimacy they both miss in their lives. Trade Secrets is directed by Patti Greer and stars Guy Newsham and Juli Heney. Following the Oct. 26th performance, P. David Temple, author of Trade Secrets, will be on hand for a fascinating “talk-back” session about “the 10-minute play”.

An Evening of One-Act Plays runs for four performances only, Oct. 24, 25 & 26 at 7:30 pm and October 27 at 2 pm. Advance tickets are $24 at Tickets Please. Save $5 opening night. Visit studiotheatreperth.com for details.

An Evening of One-Act Plays is a preview of the Eastern Ontario Drama League One-Act Play Festival, hosted this year by Perth’s own Studio Theatre, Nov. 8 – 10. The annual event brings together outstanding community theatres from across Eastern Ontario, with entries this year from Perth, Merrickville, Belleville, Kingston, Constance Bay, Peterborough, and Haliburton Highlands.
