On 15 February 2017 an investigation into child pornography came to a culmination in Smiths Falls.  The investigation started with the Canadian Police Center for Exploited Children receiving information in January from a federal agency in the United States that a person in Smiths Falls was viewing child pornography.  This information was relayed to the Ontario Provincial Police Child Sexual Exploitation Unit.

On 15 February 2017 members of the Ontario Provincial Police, the RCMP and Smiths Falls Police executed a search warrant at a McGill St residence.

Arrested and charged at the scene was Daniel Roger Daoust, aged 26 of Smiths Falls. Daoust was charged with 3 counts of possession of child pornography, two counts of printing/publishing child pornography, five counts of breach of probation and two counts of breaching a court order. Daoust was held for a bail hearing and is currently in custody.
