Ask anyone and they’ll tell you it was a perfect day. At least 100 came out to Lower Reach Park for the Cops, Kids and Canadian Tire fishing derby on Sunday. July 8 was the last free fishing day of free fishing week in Ontario and members of the Smiths Falls Police Force, the Smiths Falls Police Association, and Crime Stoppers were all on hand to make sure it was a good one. Fishing gear was available, and worms were free. When kids signed in they were all given sunglasses, a lure, a re-useable bag and a fish tattoo. Constable Dan King says kids caught bass, mostly sunfish and some perch. Prizes at the end of the day, among others, included two sit-on kayaks with paddles, and soccer balls. Parks Canada brought replicas of turtles and snakes, and staff members were available to take kids and parents for a paddle. Up behind the Kinsmen’s Pavilion, the splash pad was in constant use. Kids ended the day with a free hot dog.
