Susan Berlin Municipal Election Candidate Profile

Name: Susan Berlin

Municipality: Lanark Highlands

Position Sought: Councillor for Ward 1

Currently Retired or Working (where?): Retired community planner

Former Elected Positions/Terms if applicable: N/A

Top 3 issues facing your municipality and its residents that council has control or major influence over: The underlying issue is that we’ve had a dysfunctional Council for the past three terms, which has meant that major issues have been around all that time and remain unresolved: economic development; inability to retain senior staff; failure to communicate effectively with community members; failure to set goals and find tools that would allow those goals to be reached.

Your solutions/approach to those 3 issues: As a planner, I’ve worked with communities to help them work through the process of defining goals, seeking appropriate tools to reach those goals, and forming themselves into effective organizations. I’d like to do the same on Council — and once Council ‘works,’ it will be able to deal with the specific problems that have long been on the table.

Do you own (or have a stake in) or operate a commercial/industrial business in your municipality? (Including vacant development lands or rental units): Yes, I own a home there.
