The grand opening of Le Boat’s North American headquarters in Smiths Falls will take place in June, town councillors were advised at a Jan. 8 meeting.

Economic Development manager Cyril Cooper said the luxury houseboat rental company’s expansion plans are proceeding on schedule, with its fleet of boats for use on the Rideau Canal due to arrive in Smiths Falls Jan. 21. Built in Poland, the boats are currently in Denmark awaiting trans-Atlantic shipment. When they arrive, the boats will spend the remainder of the winter in storage in the former Canadian Tire building on Centre Street, which has been renovated for the purpose.

The European company’s local operations are set to commence on May 18. Rentals for the summer of 2018 are currently about 45 per cent sold out, said Cooper.

Le Boat will be participating in the 2018 Toronto Boat Show (from Jan. 12 to 21) and Smiths Falls Economic Development and Tourism Coordinator Ingrid Bron will be representing the town at the event.

“If Le Boat is going, it is very important that we are there with them,” commented Councillor Dawn Quinn.
