Cynthia Guerard Municipal Election Candidate Profile
Name: Cynthia Guerard
Municipality: Mississippi Mills
Position Sought: Councillor for Ramsay Ward
Currently Retired or Working (where?): Self-employed for 29 years. I own and operate My Upholstery Shop now located on Mill Street in Almonte.
Former Elected Positions/Terms if applicable: N/A
Community volunteer experience (service clubs, local committees, fundraising, etc): I have been involved with the BIA in Almonte; chaired the Ice Cream Festival; was on the original board of TYPS (Taking Young People Seriously); coached soccer and broomball; volunteered at Light up the night; on the board of Mississippi Mills Landlords Association; have opened our home to multiple (7+) exchange students, and have volunteered for many different programs and activities raising 3 daughters around our municipality.
Top 3 issues facing your municipality and its residents that council has control or major influence over: Community Official Plan (COP), Lack of Communication, Infrastructure – Roads, Trails and Maintenance for all
Your solutions/approach to those 3 issues:
The COP and NHS (Natural Heritage Systems) represent a full range of properties from across the municipality. If elected I would like to see the official plan reviewed and properly assessed by all the different stakeholders involved. This should involve representation from farmers, hunters, rural and in town residents, rural and in town businesses as well as the environmentalists.
Lack of communication. Decisions have been made, without inclusion of the property owners involved. Meetings should be held at appropriate times and locations and residents should be properly notified in advance.
We live in a beautiful community with Ramsay being a mainly rural ward. Our expectations from the municipality are basic, we require access, personal/exclusive use of our land and safety getting to and leaving from our property.
Do you own (or have a stake in) or operate a commercial/industrial business in your municipality? (Including vacant development lands or rental units): My husband and I own multiple rentals in and around Mississippi Mills, including a commercial storefront on Mill Street in Almonte.
