Jim Abbass Municipal Election Candidate Profile

Name: Jim Abbass

Municipality: Montague Township

Position Sought: Deputy Reeve

Currently Retired or Working (where?): I have worked in our family business for 50 years – Ron Abbass Electrical Ltd. and now co-own it with my brother, Terry. I am a certified master electrician.

Former Elected Positions/Terms if applicable: Currently I am serving my second consecutive term as councillor in Montague Township.

Community volunteer experience (service clubs, local committees, fundraising, etc): I have coached hockey and ball teams for 25 years in our area. I helped to install the electrical sign at the municipal building in Montague.

Top 3 issues facing your municipality and its residents that council has control or major influence over: Roads, Atironto water bills and recreation for our community.

Your solutions/approach to those 3 issues:

Roads: I would like to lobby for more provincial and federal grants to make our roads better.

Atironto water bills: I would like to have more meetings with the Town of Smiths Falls to arrive at a new agreement for these residents. We made some headway last term, but I would like to arrive at a settlement that works better for all parties this term.

Recreation: We have land in our township by Montague school. I would like to see Council assign a committee of volunteers to bring forward possibilities for this land along with the cost information.

Do you own (or have a stake in) or operate a commercial/industrial business in your municipality? (Including vacant development lands or rental units): I live with my wife in Montague and own a rental property on Dean Street.
