Motion re Beckwith Street comes to council

Downtown Smiths Falls
Posted on: June 11, 2019

Amidst barking dog and honking horns Monday, council once again visited the Beckwith Street redevelopment issue, this time with a firm, specific, draft resolution. Sticking to their guns, both Councillor Brennan and Councillor Dwyer voted against, while Councillors Alford, Mckenna, McGuire and Mayor Pankow voted for; Councillor Allen was absent.

The draft is as follows: “Whereas Council of the Corporation of the Town of Smiths Falls direct staff to follow the direction provided at the March 4, 2019 Committee of the Whole Meeting requesting that delegations respecting the Beckwith Street decision include questions to be asked of Council; and that Council of the Corporation of the Town of Smiths Falls direct the Clerk and Chief Administrative Officer to ensure that there is no duplication from what has already been presented on this topic; and that Council of the Corporation of the Town of Smiths Falls will not accept any further delegations, beyond the two already received, wishing to speak on the topics of Council’s decision to rescind previous Council’s resolution on Option A for the Beckwith Street redevelopment or current Council’s decision to adopt a Complete Streets model for the redevelopment of Beckwith Street; and further that it be understood that this Council made a decision on the method of public engagement respecting the Beckwith Street redevelopment on March 4, 2019 and this resolution formalizes that decision.”

The resolution moves to council, June 17.

I commend councillor’s Brennan and Dwyer for continuing to listen to their constituents, and being able to sit on council and listen to their five co-council, continue to undermine the public’s wishes, without losing their composure. Unlike councillor Alford and our poor excuse of a mayor.
