A new council was sworn into office Monday night in Smiths Falls. New council members Niki Dwyer, Wendy Alford, Chris McGuire and Peter McKenna joined returning councillors Jay Brennan and Lorraine Allen, as well as Mayor Shawn Pankow.

Mayor Pankow spoke glowingly of the recent growth of the town — particularly Canopy Growth’s presence as well as Le Boat. The volume of construction has risen and local contractors are ramping up to meet the growing demands for homes, he said.

On tap over the next four years are the Beckwith Street development, the replacement of the iconic water tower, the re-design and renewal of the Lombard and Abbott Street intersection, and revitalization of the municipal complex.

“The Town of Smiths Falls has chosen the right people in our unified desire to move forward,” he commented. “Their collective wisdom and the diversity of the group will lead us to the best decisions. We’re all anxious to get started with the real work,” he added.

“We’re truly a community on the rise.”
