PERTH — The Perth-on-Tay Royal Canadian Legion Branch 244 will host the annual Perth Polar Bear Plunge on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, 2026, along the Tay River.
Now in its 32nd year, the Perth Polar Bear Plunge has raised more than $500,000 for local causes. Proceeds from the 2026 event will support accessibility upgrades to the Legion Hall and ongoing programs at the Perth-on-Tay Legion.
Among those expected to take part in the plunge are event founder and Armed Forces veteran David Lavery, known locally as Canadian Dave, along with Legion president Ivan Cole and other Legion members, friends and family.
“The Plunge is a great tradition to start off the New Year,” Cole said. “We’re looking forward to seeing everyone Jan. 1 and appreciate the community’s support to keep your Legion running smoothly.”
Lavery, who founded the Perth Polar Bear Plunge more than three decades ago, said he was “looking forward to seeing all of you for this special plunge.”
Lavery will be plunging alongside his wife, Junping Lavery, known as The Little Dragon, who will be participating in her first Perth Polar Bear Plunge.
“She made a promise that when I was released from the Taliban, she would take the plunge, despite absolutely hating the cold,” Lavery said. “Let’s come together and cheer her on while supporting an important community cause through the Perth-on-Tay Royal Canadian Legion Branch 244.”
The 2026 plunge coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion. The Legion is Canada’s largest veteran support and community service organization, providing advocacy and programs for veterans while supporting communities through service and outreach.
Funds raised through the plunge will help ensure the Legion Hall remains a safe and accessible space for veterans and the broader community. The hall is regularly used by Canadian Blood Services, the Canadian Federation of University Women, the Canadian Tai Chi Academy, the Perth Enrichment Program for Seniors, PROBUS, the Town of Perth and other community groups.
Registration and fundraising are open online. Participants can register to plunge, sponsor a participant or volunteer on the day of the event. Paper pledge sheets are available at the Legion office at 26 Beckwith St. East and at the Perth Museum and Visitor Information Centre on Gore Street East. As of this week, over $6,000 has been raised toward a $50,000 goal.
Breakfast will be served starting at 8 a.m. followed by a mandatory safety briefing for plungers at 9:45 a.m. The event is set to start by 10 a.m.
