Arie Hoogenboom Municipal Election Candidate Profile
Name: Arie Hoogenboom
Municipality: Township of Rideau Lakes
Position Sought: Mayor
Currently Retired or Working (where?): Early retiree, but do work part-time as a municipal consultant, work I will give up once elected.
Former Elected Positions/Terms if applicable: I am finishing my first term as councillor South Elmsley Ward of Rideau Lakes Township.
Community volunteer experience (service clubs, local committees, fundraising, etc): Past Rotarian for 30 years including club president, active church board member, volunteer with Portland Skate the Lake, Lombardy Agricultural Society, Pitch In Week, Delta Mill, Member of Elgin and Portland Historical Societies, Delta Mill Society, Friends of the Library and Horticultural Society.
Top 3 issues facing your municipality and its residents that council has control or major influence over: Taxation, sustainable waterfront development, and transparency and fiscal accountability.
Your solutions/approach to those 3 issues:
Tax increases, if any, should be kept to inflation. This can be accomplished by finding operational efficiencies and stimulating growth.
I would encourage environmentally safe and sustainable waterfront development by making sure our building and planning processes are flexible, and we work towards a new Official Plan and Zoning Bylaw. I would support the work of our lake associations and increase our mandatory septic inspection program.
I would push to live-stream council and committee meetings and insist on balancing our annual budgets through regular monitoring. On major issues I would hold public meetings before decisions are made.
Do you own (or have a stake in) or operate a commercial/industrial business in your municipality? (Including vacant development lands or rental units): We own a principle residence and a seasonal cottage in Rideau Lakes. I operate my part-time consulting business from my home.
