I don’t like needles, I’m too busy, I already gave blood this year, I don’t think I can for health reasons — these are just some of the reasons that people don’t give blood.
Giving blood takes less than 10 minutes and doing so can add years to the life of a recipient. Last year only one in 60 Canadians gave blood, and 52 per cent of Canadians said they or a family member needed blood or blood products for surgery or medical treatments.
Six times a year there is a community blood donor clinic held at the Civitan Club in Smiths Falls. The clinic hours are from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The next clinic is scheduled for Wednesday, May 3 and organizers are trying to fill the appointments. There are close to 100 appointments still available.
If donating blood is new to you and you want more information, visit the Canadian Blood Services website. If you’re not sure if you can donate blood, take one minute and do the online eligibility quiz.
There have been changes to eligibility over the years and people who previously couldn’t donate are now able.
