Christopher McGuire Municipal Election Candidate Profile

Name: Christopher McGuire

Municipality: Smiths Falls

Position Sought: Councillor

Are you currently retired or working  and in what industry: I work as a water resources EIT for the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority.

Former elected positions or terms if applicable: President, Rideau Ski Club. I revived the club in 2016 and now take busloads of kids on trips without taxpayer subsidies.

Community volunteer experience: Community Improvement Plan (CIP), Municipal Heritage Committee, Knights of Columbus – Council officer.

Please list the top three issues facing your municipality and its residents that you would like to tackle in the upcoming council term: Taxation, community spaces, affordability.

What are your solutions or approach to those three issues: Taxation: Fiscal responsibility must continue as a priority for the next council. We need to balance the taxpayer’s need for relief with the town’s need to replace $47.6-milllion in assets that are past the end of their expected life.  I believe the responsible choice is to freeze the average tax bill so that we can invest in the renewal of our bridges, roads and trails. As an added tax saving measure, I will work to lobby the province for a mental health nurse funding for the police force that will be available 24/7 to deal with the growing demand mental health has on our uniformed officers.

Community spaces: We are in tight competition with neighbouring communities for doctors, tourists, young couples, and the like.  I will work to prioritize the enforcement of property standards and improve our public spaces including rehabilitating the fountain in Centennial Park.  If elected, I pledge to collaborate with developers to restore our heritage buildings.

Affordability: I endorse the Health Unit’s Healthy Community vision and will advocate for completing the waterfront trail between Beckwith and Mill Streets, establishing a farmer’s market within walking distance of the Rideau Canal, expanding the Walking School Bus initiative and encouraging businesses to apply for CIP grants to improve accessibility.

Do you own property and/ or operate a business in the community you are seeking election: I recently bought my first house in Smiths Falls.
