John Maloney Municipal Election Candidate Profile
Name: John Maloney
Municipality: Smiths Falls
Position Sought: Councillor
Currently Retired or Working (where?): Retired past owner of The Rideau Winery
Former Elected Positions/Terms if applicable: Four years on Council
Community volunteer experience (service clubs, local committees, fundraising, etc): The Urban Jungle, The Green Mile, Live Love Lift, Rideau Rondezvous, Sole Sisters, Paddle Fest, WAK youth group, Train Fest along with many fundraising initiatives.
Top 3 issues facing your municipality and its residents that council has control or major influence over: Aging Infrastructure, youth engagement, and financial management of the municipality.
Your solutions/approach to those 3 issues:
Infrastructure: the process is too slow. We need provincial and federal money to make this happen guided by our asset management plan.
Youth: We have a lot of great things for kids, but how do we get them involved is our challenge this coming term? We have WAK, Big Brothers and Sisters, The Gerry Lowe Foundation all giving back to the community.
Financial management: We have done service reviews and many things to reduce costs. I still believe we should have done an OPP costing to make an informed decision. I have always been impressed with our police force.
Do you own (or have a stake in) or operate a commercial/industrial business in your municipality? (Including vacant development lands or rental units): I do own property here as well as other areas. Smiths Falls is were I live and were my home is.
