Lorraine Allen Municipal Election Candidate Profile
Name: Lorraine Allen
Municipality: Smiths Falls
Position Sought: Councillor
Currently Retired or Working (where?): I am a retired elementary school principal, part-time admin for my husband’s accounting practice and have been a full-time councillor for the last eight years.
Former Elected Positions/Terms if applicable: I have served two terms as a Smiths Falls town councillor
Community volunteer experience (service clubs, local committees, fundraising, etc): I sit as Council rep on the Downtown Business Association, the Smiths Falls Municipal Drug Strategy Committee, Needle Hunter Group, the Friends of the Library, the Municipal Heritage Committee, Community Improvement Plan Evaluation Committee, The Active Transportation Network – Safe Travel to School, The Walking School Bus Committee, Rideau Environmental Action League Board and the Economic Advisory Board. I am the co-chair of the Healthy Living Festival. As well I volunteer with many other community groups and try to attend as many things as I can.
Top 3 issues facing your municipality and its residents that council has control or major influence over: Municipal spending, parks and outdoor recreation, and downtown revitalization.
Your solutions/approach to those 3 issues:
I am very proud of the way Council has worked during the last term of office to reduce our debt and become more financially sustainable. Our Service Review has looked at all aspects of our municipality’s spending and this will need to continue with the next Council in order to pay off the debt from the past. Staff have been successful getting grants that made many projects affordable with matching funds and this will need to continue as well. Parks and outdoor play areas are important to me, and I would like to see shade built at Lower Reach for the families using the Splash Pad. Each neighbourhood should have an outdoor green space for children to explore and play. This needs to be built into our new development as well.
I love Smiths Falls and one of my favourite places to be is downtown. I love to walk around shopping and chatting with passers by. It usually includes eating and drinking at one of our many great eateries. I sit on the DBA Board as Council rep and am very proud of the work our Beautification Committee has been doing: flowers, benches and banners to name a few. Our biggest challenge as we go forward is to make our businesses accessible. Chris Cooper is a speaker at our Heritage Symposium and is an expert in this area so hopefully we will learn ways to do this in our downtown.
Do you own (or have a stake in) or operate a commercial/industrial business in your municipality? (Including vacant development lands or rental units): My husband owns a very successful accounting practice out of our home in Smiths Falls.
