Wendy Alford Municipal Election Candidate Profile

Name: Wendy Alford

Municipality: Smiths Falls

Position Sought: Councillor

Currently Retired or Working (where?): Retired from the broadband industry (i.e. internet, digital phone and cable television).

Former Elected Positions/Terms if applicable: Smiths Falls town councilor from 2003-2006

Community volunteer experience (service clubs, local committees, fundraising, etc): It has been my pleasure and privilege to be involved throughout my entire adult life in many endeavours. these are a few of the highlights:Smiths Falls Settlers Days Festival – several positions; Smiths Falls Minor Soccer Executive; President, Smiths Falls Minor Hockey; Chair, Smiths Falls Old Home Week 2000; Board Member, Smiths Falls and District Centre for Youth; Chair, Fundraising Golf Tournament for local Syrian family.

Top 3 issues facing your municipality and its residents that council has control or major influence over: Managing our town’s economic growth and development, health care, and the future of the Smiths Falls Police Service.

Your solutions/approach to those 3 issues: It is crucial that we manage residential, commercial and industrial development by setting priorities and crafting policies and processes that enhance our quality of life and the strength of our business sector. There is a proposal to add a levy on the property tax bills as a way to support our hospital. We do need to support our Hospital, but I believe we can do that without further burdening our property owners. I seeks to continue to support our municipal police service in a fiscally responsible manner.

Do you own (or have a stake in) or operate a commercial/industrial business in your municipality? (Including vacant development lands or rental units): I own property in Smiths Falls.
