A feast of bison will be among the cultural highlights as the Town of Smiths Falls’ Canada 150 celebrations continue with a pow wow on Turtle Island June 10 and 11.
Economic Development Director Cyril Cooper told councillors at a meeting of council’s Committee of the Whole on May 23 that the pow wow is being organized and hosted by the Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute’s Indigenous Study Program.
The students will be hosting members of the Akwesasne Mohawks as well as the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation, who will be conducting the pow wow.
The pow wow will open on Saturday, June 10 at 10 a.m., followed by the grand entrance at noon. A second grand entrance takes place at 6 p.m. with the closing ceremony at 8 p.m. A community feast of bison will follow the evening grand entrance.
Celebrations on Sunday, June 11 will open at 10 a.m., with another grand entrance at noon, and the closing ceremony at 5 p.m. The pow wow will feature traditional song, dance and drumming. Vendors and exhibitors are being invited and will be on site throughout the weekend.
