Food Basics will be staying in the County Fair Mall, and that’s great news for Smiths Falls, Mayor Shawn Pankow said March 20.

“We’re thrilled and excited that it will remain as an asset in our community,” the mayor announced at a regular meeting of town council.

The future of the grocery store, which employs 40 people, was uncertain after mall owners Rio Can Real Estate Trust announced in November their plans to close, and possibly demolish, the mall by the end of January 2017.

The fate of the 130,000 square foot building and the 14.5 acres of land it occupies appeared to be sealed until an announcement on Dec. 15 that it had been purchased by local entrepreneurs the Saumure Group.

At that time Saumure Group Vice-President Chris Saumure stated that Food Basics would definitely not be leaving at the end of January, and that it was his intention to negotiate an arrangement for the store to stay in its current location.
