Vehicle collides with snowbank after attempting to flee from police, multiple arrests made in relation to IPV

Suspect charged in shoplift investigation

On January 16th, 2026, Smiths Falls Police Service were informed of a theft that occurred at a local retail store. Members of the Smiths Falls Police attended the area to commence the investigation. The suspect was identified with the assistance of surveillance footage at the scene. Shortly after, the suspect was then located and charged.  

As a result of the investigation, 20-year-old Tyler GREER of Smiths Falls stands charged with theft under $5000 (x1). The accused was released on an Appearance Notice with a scheduled court date.

Arrest made in IPV investigation

On January 17th, 2026, Smiths Falls Police received information of an intimate partner disturbance that just occurred. Members of the Smiths Falls Police attended the scene to commence the investigation. Upon officers’ arrival, the suspect began to flee out the back window of the residence. After a short foot pursuit, the suspect was taken into custody. 

As a result of the investigation, a 20-year-old male from Smiths Falls, stands charged with assault cause bodily harm (x1), assault (x1), criminal harassment (x1), failing to comply with their probation order (x4), failing to comply with their bail release order (x2), breach of recognizance (x2), and resist peace officer (x1). The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing.

On January 19th, 2026, Smiths Falls Police received further information that the accused was breaching their non-communication conditions while in custody at the correctional facility. An investigation was conducted into this matter by members of the Smiths Falls Police Service.

As a result of the second investigation, the accused was additionally charged with failing to comply with an order (x1), failing to comply with their probation order (x3), failing to comply with their release order (x1), breach of recognizance (x1) and criminal harassment (x1). The accused remained in custody pending another bail court hearing.

Assault charge laid after disturbance

On January 17th, 2026, Smiths Falls Police Communication Centre received a 9-1-1 call alerting of a disturbance. Members of the Smiths Falls Police Service attended the scene to commence the investigation. One person suffered a minor injury, and the suspect was subsequently arrested at the scene.

As a result of the investigation, 33-year-old Christian DESARMIA of Smiths Falls stands charged with assault (x1). The accused was later released with conditions and a scheduled court date.

IPV disturbance at hotel leads to arrest

On January 18th, 2026, Smiths Falls Police received information of a disturbance that occurred between two guests staying at a local hotel. Members of the Smiths Falls Police Service attended the scene to commence the investigation. One suspect involved was known to be bound by a court ordered house arrest condition. The suspect was subsequently arrested for breaching this release order.

As a result of the investigation, a 49-year-old male from Smiths Falls stands charged with failing to comply with their probation order (x3) and failing to comply with release order (x1). The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing.

Ottawa Police Service assist Smiths Falls police with arrest

On January 18th, 2026, the Smiths Falls Police Service were informed by the Ottawa Police Service that they successfully located and arrested a subject that was wanted on an outstanding warrant. The warrant was issued from an occurrence on October 19th, 2025 stemming from an intimate partner violence investigation.

As a result of the investigation, a 37-year-old male from Ottawa stands charged with unlawfully in dwelling (x1), theft under $5000 (x1), and breach of recognizance (x1). The accused was later released with conditions and a scheduled court date.

Wanted subject located and arrested

On January 19th, 2026, members of the Smiths Falls Police Service successfully located a subject who was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant. The warrant was issued as a result of a January 4th, 2026, intimate partner violence investigation.

As a result of the investigation, a 27-year-old female from Smiths Falls stands charged with assault (x1). The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing.

Traffic stop leads to arrest

On January 20th, 2026, a member of the Smiths Falls Police Service conducted a proactive traffic stop as a result of a traffic violation. Further investigation discovered that the driver was on a court ordered curfew. The driver was arrested at the scene without incident.

As a result of the investigation, 33-year-old Chad MCDOUGALL of Smiths Falls stands charged with failing to comply with their release order (x2) as well as multiple provincial charges in relation to the traffic stop. The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing.

Toronto Police Service assist Smiths Falls police by locating wanted male

On January 22nd, 2026, the Toronto Police Service informed Smiths Falls Police that they successfully located and arrested a subject that was wanted on an outstanding warrant. Members of the Smiths Falls Police Service attended the Toronto area to take over custody of the subject who was wanted from a November 2025 intimate partner violence investigation.

As a result of the investigation, a 39-year-old male from Scarborough stands charged with failing to comply with their probation order (x16), theft under $5000 (x3), trespassing at night (x2), mischief under $5000 (x1), break enter dwelling (x1), uttering threats (x2), and criminal harassment (x1). The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing. 

Wanted subject surrenders to police

On January 26th, 2026, members of the Smiths Falls Police Service arrested one subject without incident. The subject surrendered themselves on outstanding charges from a January 23rd, 2026, intimate partner violence investigation.

As a result of the investigation, a 34-year-old male form Smiths Falls stands charged with failing to comply with their probation order (x2). The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing.

OPP ROPE assist Smiths Falls police with locating wanted subject

On January 27th, 2026, the OPP Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Unit informed Smiths Falls Police Service that they successfully located and arrested a subject who was wanted on an outstanding warrant. Members of Smiths Falls Police Service attended OPP Rideau Lakes Detachment to take over custody of the subject. The subject was wanted from a December 2025 intimate partner violence investigation.

As a result of the investigation, a 37-year-old male from Westport stands charged with harassing communications (x1), mischief under $5000 (x1) and breach of their recognizance (x1). The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing.

Vehicle collides with snowbank after attempting to flee from police

On January 28th, 2026, a member of Smiths Falls Police Service on proactive patrol observed a driver who was known to be wanted by police. The driver immediately began to flee from police in a dangerous manner and collided with a snowbank a short distance away. The driver then fled the vehicle on foot and went inside a residence. After brief discussions the driver exited the residence and surrendered to police.

As a result of the investigation, 38-year-old Darcy BELL of Smiths Falls stands charged with dangerous operation (x1), flight from police officer (x1) operation while prohibited (x1) and numerous provincial driving offences.  The accused was also charged from an outstanding December 2025 incident where he assaulted and evaded police. As a result of this investigation, the accused stands charged with obstruct peace officer (x1), assault police officer with a weapon(x1) and trespassing at night (x1). The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing.

Impaired driving charges laid

On January 29, 2026, Smiths Falls Police received information of an intoxicated female at a local retail store. Members of the Smiths Falls Police Service attended the scene to commence the investigation. Upon arrival, officers observed the suspect leave the store and enter into her vehicle to drive away. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was subsequently arrested for impaired driving.

As a result of the investigation, 59-year-old Anne GASKIN of Smiths Falls stands charged with operation while impaired (x1), operation while impaired with blood alcohol concentration over 80mg (x1) and being intoxicated in a public place (x1). The accused was later released with conditions and a scheduled court date.

Intimate Partner Violence dispute results in charges

On January 29th, 2026, Smiths Falls Police received numerous 9-1-1 calls for a disturbance in progress at a residence. Members of the Smiths Falls Police Service attended the scene to commence the investigation. One suspect was arrested at scene without further incident.

As a result of the investigation, a 39-year-old male from Ottawa stands charged with assault (x1) and indecent act (x1). The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing.

The charges in these matters have not been proven in court.
