Series of charges laid following local investigations in Smiths Falls

Smiths Falls Police respond to incidents ranging from shoplifting to impaired driving

Wanted person located

On January 7th, 2026 members of Smiths Falls Police Service were on proactive patrol when a wanted suspect was located. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

The 32 year old, female from Smiths Falls was wanted on a bench warrant for failing to appear in court on previous intimate partner violence charges. The accused was later released from custody with a new scheduled court date.

Intimate Partner Violence leads to impaired charges

On January 8th, 2026 Smiths Falls Police Service received information of a disturbance in progress at a local residence. Members of Smiths Falls Police responded to the scene to commence the investigation. As a result of the investigation one person was taken into custody.

As a result of the investigation, a 49 year old male from Smiths Falls stands charged with assault (x1), operation while impaired (x1) and operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration over 80 mg (x1). The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing.

Subject arrested on outstanding warrant

On January 10th 2026 Smiths Falls Police with the assistance of Kingston Police located and arrested a subject on an outstanding warrant.

33 year old Cassandra MEILLEUR had a warrant issued from an April 2025 bail violation investigation. As a result of the investigation the accused stands charged with failing to comply with their bail release order (X2). The accused was later released with conditions and a scheduled court date.

Subject arrested from 2021 investigation

On January 10th, 2026 Smiths Falls Police with the assistance of Ontario Provincial Police located and arrested a subject from a November 2021 investigation.

39 year old, Steven RONAN was wanted on two outstanding warrants from a traffic stop investigation where the accused fled from police. The accused stands charged with obstruct police officer (x1), dangerous operation (x1), operation while prohibited (x7), flight from police officer (x1), personation with intent to avoid arrest (x1), take motor vehicle without consent (x1) and multiple provincial offences. The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing.

Arrest made in shoplift investigation

On January 13th, 2026 Smiths Falls Police received information of a shoplift incident in progress at a local business. Members of Smiths Falls Police responded to the scene to commence the investigation. One person was taken into custody without incident.

As a result of the investigation, 39 year old Melissa POWERS of Smiths Falls stands charged with theft under $5000 (x1), assault (x1) and possession of a schedule I substance (x1). The accused was later released with conditions and a scheduled court date.

Traffic complaint leads to impaired charges

On January 13th, 2026 Smiths Falls Police received a traffic complaint informing of a possible impaired driver. Members of Smiths Falls Police responded to the area and located the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle failed the approved screening device demand and was subsequently arrested.

As a result of the investigation, 36 year old Joshua BARRY of Smiths Falls stands charged with operation while impaired (x1) and operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration over 80 mg (x1). The accused was later released from custody with conditions and a scheduled court date.

Shoplift investigation end in arrest

On January 14th, 2026 a member of the Smiths Falls Police was on proactive patrol and located a subject who was known to be wanted on outstanding charges. The subject was arrested without incident.

40 year old Brandee DOUGHERTY stands charged with theft under $5000 (x1) disguise with intent (x1) and failing to comply with probation order (x3). These charges were a result of a December 2025 theft investigation. The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing.

Impaired driving charges laid in collision investigation

On January 15th 2026, Smiths Falls Police received a 9-1-1 call alerting of a motor vehicle collision that just occurred. Members of the Smiths Falls Police responded to the area. The driver of one of the vehicles involved was arrested at the scene.

As a result of the investigation, 44 year old Lee HEFFERING of Lombardy stands charged with operation while impaired (x1) and operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration over 80 mg (x1). The accused was later released with conditions and a scheduled court date.

The charges in these matters have not been proven in court.
