The Town of Smiths Falls staff will have to go back to the drawing board to ensure the first phase of long-awaited renovations to the town hall stay within budget.
Manager of Community Services Art Manhire reported to council at a March 5 meeting that just three bids were received for Phase 1 of the multi-phase project. One of the bids didn’t meet all requirements to be accepted, and the lowest of the remaining two, from Guy Saumure and Son, came in at $278,000, which is $78,000 more than the $200,000 budgeted for this phase.
Phase 1 of the town hall project will see modernization of the 2,700 square foot space occupied by the town’s tourism and economic development department. Work will include demolition of existing space, installation of new glass partitions, new flooring and walls, new lighting and electrical layouts, renovations to existing washrooms, and a new entrance.
Manhire advised councillors that staff’s recommendation was to award the contract to Guy Saumure and Son, but to “go back and change the scope of the work to accommodate the funds that we have.”
Plans for the town hall have been developed by the Ventin Group, and call for work on the entire town hall complex to be divided into a total of five phases.
