SUBMITTED

The Town of Smiths Falls is proud to announce it has entered into a formal agreement of twinning and cooperation with the City of Zolochiv, Lviv Oblast of Ukraine. This partnership represents a shared commitment to mutual understanding, cultural exchange, and long-term collaboration between our two communities.

The agreement, signed on June 16, 2025, establishes a foundation for ongoing dialogue and exchange in areas including science and education, sports, economic development and tourism, culture and historical architecture, and protection of the environment. As Ukraine continues to face immense challenges due to ongoing conflict, Smiths Falls is honored to stand in solidarity and foster meaningful support and connection.

Mayor Shawn Pankow stated, “This partnership is more than symbolic — it is a commitment to learning from one another, sharing our strengths, and promoting peace and cooperation across borders. We are humbled to walk alongside our Ukrainian partners in both support and friendship.”

The twinning agreement also opens the door for community-led cultural initiatives, and youth cooperation. Through civic engagement and public participation, the residents of Smiths Falls will have the opportunity to actively contribute to this evolving relationship. “This agreement opens the door to new friendships, shared learning, and a deeper appreciation of each other’s histories and hopes. We are excited to grow together through this unique international connection,” noted Mayor Pankow.

The Town of Smiths Falls extends its gratitude to the Ukrainian Embassy and all local stakeholders who supported the development of this initiative. Details of upcoming cultural and educational activities related to the new partnership will be shared with the public in the coming months.
