Paula Nichols of PN Parking Solutions and Karl Grenke, Senior Planner, addressed Committee of the Whole Monday evening presenting the first part of a parking utilization study for the Town in response to new and increased development pressures downtown and in conjunction with the Beckwith Street revitalization project. Council budgeted $25,000 in 2018 for the study; of that, about $15,400 remains unspent.
The purpose of the study is to analyze current utilization of the Town’s publicly available parking supply, both on-street and in two public lots; the analysis investigated occupancy, turnover and duration of stay during peak times in the summer of 2018; in summary, results suggest a “fairly fluid turnover with demand being the highest on Beckwith Street” and it appears “that is highly localized.”
Next steps will be to focus on parking management including rates and regulations. A future study would be to consider the availability of overnight and residential spaces in the downtown core area.
