Apartment complex, affordable housing coming to Brockville Street

The Settlers Square Development, a 110-unit apartment complex at 260 Brockville St. is in the midst of construction.

At a May 19 meeting, Smiths Falls council passed all three bylaws in the site plan agreement to allow the project to move forward.

The 110-unit apartment complex will include four units in the north building designated as affordable housing for the next 20 years, Senior Planner Karl Grenke told council at the virtual committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, May 19.

“This emerged out of Chris Saumure’s involvement with the housing taskforce,” Mayor Shawn Pankow said. “It makes a big difference for people.”

The rental units are primarily geared towards seniors and will feature underground parking.

“I applaud the efforts of staff and the Saumure Group. As Karl said, it’s a complex arrangement and the first of its kind in Smiths Falls,” Coun. Wendy Alford said. “Mr. Saumure’s willingness to enter into construction of 110 units that are very much needed is very much eclipsed by an affordability agreement for those four units that will hopefully set an example for future more inclusive development.”

Affordable housing is sorely needed in Smiths Falls and the surrounding areas, as identified in the town’s current strategic plan.
