New parking restrictions in place on Thurber Street

During Monday night’s council meeting in Smiths Falls, Director of Public Works Paul McMunn informed council of recent changes to traffic signage along Thurber Street.

Town staff has installed No Parking signs along the north side of Thurber Street between Mary and McGill streets. There will also be No Stopping from 8am to 9am and 3pm to 4pm during the school year. The restrictions at this time are based on field observations, performed in conjunction with Bylaw and Police Services. These observations saw congestion coming from Duncan J Schoular Public School, with parents dropping their children off and picking them up at these times.

Councilor Peter McKenna asked if a safer drop-off option is being presented for parents.

Deputy Clerk Nadine Bennett noted that the request for new signs came from the school principal, and the school has communicated alternative arrangements to parents.

“During the summer,” McMunn elaborated, “we wouldn’t need to have these restrictions.”
