Statement from the CAO regarding impending U.S. tariffs

SUBMITTED

The Town of Perth is closely monitoring the impending tariffs set to take  effect on Tuesday, Feb. 4, and their potential impact on our local economy. As a  community with a strong industrial base, we recognize the concerns of local businesses,  workers, and residents who may be affected by these trade barriers.

Michael Touw, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the Town of Perth, issued the  following statement:

“As with the rest of Canada, the Town of Perth is concerned about the tariffs that are due to  come into place tonight. Perth has a strong industrial base, providing good paying jobs to  many in Perth and Lanark County. Many, if not all, of our local industries have highly  integrated supply chains and customer bases with the United States (and beyond). The  Town strongly opposes tariffs and any trade actions that violate the UMSCA free trade  agreement and that cause harm to workers and communities on both sides of the border.  We are hopeful for a quick end to this trade war and look forward to returning to the  mutually beneficial relationship we’ve enjoyed for generations with our neighbour. The  Town of Perth will be extending an invitation shortly to local industries to meet, discuss  ways to mutually lobby for a resolution, and to examine ways in which the Town can  provide support.”

The Town remains committed to supporting local businesses and advocating for a fair and  cooperative economic environment. Further updates will be provided as more information  becomes available.
