Doors Open Rideau Lakes is back for the first time in eight  years. Taking place on August 16 and 17, 2025, enthusiasts are invited to visit otherwise  unseen historical places and discover timeless architectural, cultural and natural heritage  experiences within the township.

A collaboration between the Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee and Doors Open  Ontario, this event enables visitors to gain rare, free access to buildings and spaces that are  normally closed to the public or sites that would typically charge admission. Many sites will  also host special interactive exhibitions.

Glimpse a rare rural mausoleum, see the Rideau from high atop a granite cliff; marvel at a  19th-century military blockhouse or visit a shop that has been a merchant’s haven for more  than 150 years. See a colour-changing stained glass window or stroll on a field walk guided  by scientists. Be awestruck by an 1800s full body baptismal font or ascend a sweeping wooden staircase in an enchanting historic mansion. Take a trip along the Rideau Canal  through historical photos or watch wide-eyed as 200-year-old millstones grind wheat into flour. There are so many unique experiences to explore in Rideau Lakes!

“Discovery is at the heart of our Doors Open event in August,” said Marie White, Rideau Lakes  Economic Development and Cultural Heritage Coordinator. “This is a great opportunity to visit  intriguing heritage places and explore our historic villages.”

Save the date and keep an eye on the website for an official list of sites and itineraries this  spring to plan your route around Rideau Lakes during the event. Details are available at www.doorsopenontario.on.ca/rideaulakes with more listings being added.
