Sweeping through 150 years of curling history in Perth

Members and locals come together to celebrate the milestone at the Perth Curling Club

PERTH — The Perth Curling Club is nearly as old as the country itself, and members are celebrating the milestone in a big way.

From Oct. 3 to 5, the club will open its 150th season with “150 Ends” of continuous play that will run through the day and night until the final stone is thrown. For perspective, a standard game has just eight ends and lasts about two hours.

“We decided to try something different that involves most everyone, and we have 150 members, including our youth, who have signed up to participate,” said co-ordinator André Hurtubise. “It’s a herculean effort and something our members have fully embraced.”

The three-day celebration will also feature a silent auction of items created by members, skills competitions, a pancake breakfast, a raffle, and an opening ceremony with local dignitaries. Play will wrap up Sunday with a celebratory luncheon.

The Perth Curling Club, founded in 1876, has been a cornerstone of sport and social life in the community. “We build social and physically active lifestyles for all, one rock at a time,” said Hurtubise.
