Mississippi Mills council awards roadwork contracts, declares Truth and Reconciliation Day

ALMONTE — Road upgrades, climate action, and inclusion were front and centre at Mississippi Mills council this week, as councillors approved more than $600,000 in infrastructure contracts, backed grassroots green initiatives, and set a special meeting to discuss a new municipal inclusion charter.

Climate action

Sue Brandum and Sadie Brule of Climate Network Lanark asked the municipality to help promote local climate programs and resources. Staff were directed to work with the non-profit to share information through the municipal website and social media.

Inclusion charter

Gabriella Salera of Local Immigration Partnership – Lanark & Renfrew provided an update on a pilot inclusion charter and welcome package, with Mississippi Mills chosen as the test community. A special Mississippi Mills council meeting will be held Thursday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. to discuss the plan.

Road and sewer contracts

  • Thomas Cavanagh Construction Ltd. received $196,000 (plus HST) for resurfacing Ramsay Concession 8, Pick Road and Argyle Street.
  • Thomas Cavanagh Construction Ltd. also received $175,957.80 (plus HST) for asphalt milling and paving on Water Street in Almonte.
  • Clearwater Structures Inc. was awarded $215,407 (plus HST) for the 2025 sanitary sewer lining program.

Financial plan

Mississippi Mills council reviewed KPMG’s 10-year Long Term Financial Plan for 2026–2035, which outlines budgets, staffing, reserves and funding needs. Staff will prepare a work plan to address recommendations, including financial policy updates and a capital levy.

Proclamations

Mississippi Mills council declared Sept. 28 as British Home Child Day, recognizing more than 100,000 children sent from the UK to Canada between 1869 and 1948. Sept. 30 was proclaimed National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. A candlelight vigil organized by local youth will take place Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. in Almonte’s Riverfront Park.

Other business

Committee of the Whole reviewed draft subdivision plans for the Brown Lands and Hannan Hills developments, as well as quarterly reports.
