Rideau Lakes Fire & Rescue emphasizes the importance of working smoke and CO alarms
RIDEAU LAKES — Rideau Lakes Fire & Rescue has received 156 smoke and carbon monoxide alarms through Project Zero, a provincial safety program supported by Enbridge Gas and the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council. The alarms will be distributed to residents who need them, as part of a broader initiative supplying more than 14,200 units across 75 Ontario communities to help reduce fire and carbon monoxide fatalities.

“Too many preventable tragedies start with a missing or non-working alarm. These units give our residents the vital early warning they need,” Deputy Chief Shane Peters said during the announcement.
Leeds–Grenville–Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MPP Steve Clark said the program aims to prevent emergencies before they occur. Enbridge Gas has invested $450,000 in this year’s rollout, contributing to more than 115,000 alarms provided over 17 years.
Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless, and working alarms are required by law in homes with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages.
