Assaults on Smiths Falls police officers and hospital staff lead to several charges

Charge laid after hospital staff assaulted

On July 7th, 2025 Smiths Falls Police were called to attend the hospital due to a report of an aggressive patient. Upon arrival, responding officers learned that a staff member was assaulted by the patient and a criminal investigation was commenced.

On July 13th, 2025 Smiths Falls Police arrested a 27 year old male suspect in relation to this incident. The accused stands charged with assault (x1). The accused was later released with conditions and a scheduled court date.

Members of the public come to the assistance of officer

On July 13th, 2025 Smiths Falls Police Communications Centre received two 9-1-1 calls from concerned members of the public alerting of a SFPS officer in need of immediate assistance. Additional officers were dispatched to the area of Chambers Street to assist. A female suspect was arrested at the scene without further incident.

As a result of this incident, a 23 year old female from Smiths Falls stands charged with resist peace officer (x1) and assault peace officer (x1).

The accused was also wanted on outstanding charges from a July 6th family dispute investigation. As a result of the investigation, the accused stands charged with attempt to abduct (x1) and assault (x1). The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing.

Youth surrenders to police on outstanding charges

On July 16th, 2025 a 16 year old male from Smiths Falls surrendered himself to police. The accused was wanted on outstanding charges relating to a July 10th shoplift investigation. The accused stands charged with theft under $5000 (x1), failing to comply with release order (x1), and breaching their recognizance (x1). The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing.

SFPS officers assaulted on early morning patrol

On July 17th, 2025 at approximately 3:00 a.m. Smiths Falls Police were conducting a proactive patrol and came across an individual standing in the middle of the roadway. Responding officers attempted to speak with the subject to check on their wellbeing. The subject quickly became combative with officers at the scene. OPP Lanark County and Lanark County Paramedic Services were also requested to assist at the scene. The individual was arrested and brought to the hospital for further assessment.

As a result of the investigation, the individual has been charged with assault peace officer (x2), obstruct peace officer (xl) and resist peace officer (xl). The accused was later cleared medically and held in custody for a bail court hearing.

The charges in these matters have not been proven in court.
