Rideau Lakes battery energy storage system project no longer under consideration
RIDEAU LAKES — A proposed battery energy storage system for Highway 15 in Lombardy is no longer moving forward. The Township of Rideau Lakes issued a public notice on Dec. 3 confirming that proponent Simon Rowland, CEO of Renewable Power Partners Inc., has withdrawn his request for the project at 774 Hwy. 15.
The township said the proposal is no longer under consideration. Rowland indicated he may choose to submit an application at a later date. Any future proposal would be reviewed under municipal and provincial requirements, including opportunities for public engagement.
The decision comes two days after a virtual council meeting where Rowland presented the plan, which outlined 16 battery containers with 9.5 megawatts of storage capacity under the province’s Long-Term 2 procurement program. He told council the system would charge during low-demand hours and discharge during peak periods to improve grid stability.
Councillors voted 5-4 to delay a decision and hold a public meeting before proceeding. Several residents who addressed council said they were not opposed to energy storage in principle but felt overwhelmed by the volume and complexity of information provided.
Council’s vote pushed the matter to a later meeting, but the proponent withdrew before the public session could take place.
The township said it remains committed to clear communication and transparent planning processes. If a new application is brought forward in the future, it will undergo the same review steps, including public consultation.
