Build a Mountain of Food first blitz collects 6,254 lbs of food, $5,172 for The Hunger Stop

Community rallies as the Build a Mountain of Food campaign begins

And they’re off!

The RCL Automotive Build a Mountain of Food campaign is off to a strong start after collection blitzes in Almonte and Carleton Place on Nov. 8, supporting the Lanark County Food Bank – The Hunger Stop.

After the first day, the campaign collected 6,254 lbs of food and $5,172 in cash donations.

“Week 1 is in the books,” said one of the campaign coordinators, Jim Wright. “Good start to the campaign. A little chilly, but good support.”

Two new store managers are involved this year: Gagan Singh at FreshCo and Marcia Bobb-Semple at Giant Tiger in Carleton Place.

Wright said the prepackaged donation bags continue to be popular with shoppers.

“Pre-packaged bags make it easy to donate, and with these bags, the food bank is getting items specifically for children,” he said.

Stores will continue to sell prepackaged bags through the week, so those totals will rise a little, Wright noted, but the goal remains straightforward.

“During the Build a Mountain of Food campaign, our mission is a simple one. To fill the shelves of your local food banks.”

The campaign moves to Lanark and Perth on Nov. 15.
