The town’s first fully electric ice resurfacer
SMITHS FALLS – The Town of Smiths Falls is taking another important step toward sustainability with the arrival of its first fully electric ice resurfacer, the Engo Ice Wolf, affectionately nicknamed Sherlock Ohms by arena staff.
The new resurfacer replaces an aging propane-powered unit at the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre and represents a tangible shift toward cleaner, safer, and more energy-efficient operations. The Engo Ice Wolf produces zero greenhouse gas emissions during use, eliminating an estimated 9 to 10 tonnes of CO₂ annually, equivalent to burning more than 4,000 litres of propane. Beyond the environmental benefit, the new model provides a quieter, fume-free experience for skaters and spectators alike, while reducing operational costs over its lifetime.

Every step we take to reduce our carbon footprint, improve safety for staff, and enhance the experience for our residents adds up to meaningful progress.”
The Engo Ice Wolf features advanced safety and performance upgrades, including a quick-change blade system that allows for faster and safer blade replacements, automated auger cleaning, and a fully electric drivetrain that runs quietly and efficiently. Operators from the Town’s Community Services team are currently undergoing training on the new machine to prepare for its first full season on the ice.

The purchase aligns with the Town’s broader sustainability and climate action goals, reinforcing its commitment to environmental leadership and community well-being. Residents can expect to see Sherlock Ohms in action as the 2025 ice season gets underway.
