Fire deemed accidental, officer assaulted during wellbeing check and SFPS make arrests for drugs, theft and IPV

House fire deemed accidental

On July 1st 2025, the Smiths Falls Police were called to assist Smiths Falls Fire with traffic control at the scene of a residential fire. Only one occupant was home at the time of the fire with no reported injuries. Investigators deemed the source of the fire to be non-suspicious.

Wellbeing check leads to officer being assaulted

On July 2nd, 2025 members of the Smiths Falls Police as well as a MCRT (Mobile Crisis Response Team) member were dispatched to a residential location to conduct a wellbeing check on an individual.

As a result of the investigation the individual was apprehended under the Mental Health Act. During the apprehension officers were also assaulted by the individual. The individual was taken to hospital for further assessment. The individual was also charged for administer noxious thing with intent (x1), assault peace officer with a weapon (x1) and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm (x1). The accused was released with conditions and scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Wanted male arrested -Additional drug charges laid

On July 3rd, 2025 a member of the Smiths Falls Police was conducting a proactive patrol and observed a wanted male entering a local gas station. The male was arrested and found to be in possession of suspected cocaine.

As a result of the investigation, 40 year old Matthew RYAN of Lombardy was charged with theft under $5000 stemming from a previous shoplift investigation. The accused was additionally charged with possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking (x1) and possession of property obtained by crime (x1). The accused was later released with conditions and a scheduled court date.

Unwanted male arrested outside residence

On July 4th, 2025 Smiths Falls Police received a call for an unwanted male outside a residence. The male was known to police and currently on court ordered conditions to not be at the location. These previous charges stemmed from an Intimate Partner Violence investigation. Officers located and arrested the suspect without further incident. As a result of the investigation, a 32 year old male from Perth stands charged with breaching their recognizance (xl) and failing to comply with their probation order (x2). The accused was held in custody pending a bail court hearing.

Plant thief identified and arrested

On July 6th, 2025 the Smiths Falls Police were informed of a theft that occurred at a local store’s garden center. Members of Smiths Falls Police commenced an investigation into the matter and were able to identify the suspect from video
surveillance.

As a result of the investigation, 63 year old Howard DICKSON has been charged with theft under $5000 (xl) and failing to comply with their release order (xl). The accused was located and arrested on July 12th. The accused was held in custody for their scheduled bail court hearing.

One arrested for Intimate Partner Violence breach

On July 8th, 2025 members of the Smiths Falls Police Service were alerted of a male suspect possibly in breach of their conditions. The suspect was successfully located in the downtown core and arrested without further incident.

As a result of the investigation, a 36 year old male from Smiths Falls stands charged with failing to comply with their release order (x2). The accused was held in custody pending a bail court hearing.
