Fostering community connections through a good cup of coffee

STAFF WRITER

In the heart of Merrickville sits the bustling hub known as The Village Bean Coffee House. Especially vibrant just before the shops open, it’s where locals and visitors alike flock for their morning fix of caffeine.

“It’s the morning meeting spot in Merrickville,” owner Robyn Fredrickson said. “Our coffee shop is all about fostering connections.”

Fredrickson’s journey to owning the coffee shop began unexpectedly, after she found herself laid off from her pharmaceutical job years ago. Starting with shifts at the shop, she eventually seized the opportunity to purchase it with her father, Kurt, on April Fool’s Day in 2011.

Through thick and thin, including the challenges of the pandemic, The Village Bean has remained a steadfast presence, open seven days a week. Fredrickson reflects on the blessing of being part of the Merrickville community, acknowledging the hard work of her team and the unwavering support of their loyal customers.

In addition to their beloved offerings like homemade carrot cake and freshly roasted coffee blends, The Village Bean now features Maverick’s Donuts on Saturdays, adding to their reputation as a local favorite. Fredrickson’s involvement in the chamber of commerce’s Streetscape working group demonstrates her commitment to enhancing the village’s charm and vibrancy.

As the conversation next to us comes to a close, Fredrickson takes a moment to introduce herself, embodying the spirit of community that defines The Village Bean. Another business owner chimes in, affirming the coffee house’s status as the heart of the village.

With her gaze fixed on the future, Fredrickson envisions endless opportunities for fostering warmth and connection within the community, much like the ever-flowing stream of coffee in her cup.

To experience the charm of The Village Bean Coffee House firsthand, visit them at 205B St. Lawrence Street in Merrickville, or reach out at 613-269-4646. Stay updated on their offerings and events by checking their website and following them on Facebook and Instagram.
