Local hospital introduces mobility team to improve patient outcomes

SUBMITTED

The Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital (the “Hospital”) is proud to announce a new and innovative program that will support our in-patients and enhance their mobility.  In August 2023, the Hospital presented a proposal to the Ministry of Health to secure permanent funding for the program.  The primary goal of the program is to improve the overall health and recovery outcomes of our in-patients.

The program will see the creation of the “Mobility Team” which will adopt a multi-disciplinary approach involving professionals such as Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Rehabilitation Assistants, Nurses and Physicians.  Involving physiotherapy and occupational therapy into individual patient care plans will boost each patient’s mobility and achieve the goal of improved mobility.

Studies show that regular mobilization improves recovery outcomes and prevents loss of function which can ultimately lead to loss of independence.  This Mobility Team will primarily assist the Hospital’s frail and elderly patient group.

“We are excited to support our patients with this new program.  The Mobility Team will work with our patients so that they can get home sooner and potentially avoid being readmitted to the hospital,” stated Brian Smith, Vice President, Clinical Services/CHRO.

“Encouraging our patients to move regularly can improve their recovery and help preserve physical and cognitive abilities. One simple way to mobilize patients is by increasing their walking activity,” said Herve Cavanaugh, Senior Physiotherapist.
