With a federal election on the horizon and the political landscape shifting under the weight of inflation, housing concerns and trade uncertainty, candidates are beginning to stake their ground.
In Lanark–Frontenac, only one candidate has stepped forward to answer our “3 Questions” series so far. Michelle Foxton, the Liberal Party’s nominee, shares her stance on key issues affecting the region—from U.S. tariffs and economic recovery, to leadership, rural infrastructure, and what it takes to earn the trust of long-time Conservative voters.
Foxton is on the ballot with incumbent Conservative MP Scott Reid; NDP Danielle Rae, and Green Party’s Jesse Pauley.
Here’s what Foxton had to say.
1. How will your party’s plan protect local jobs and small businesses from the impact of U.S. tariffs?
Lanark–Frontenac’s economy depends on resilient small businesses, farmers, and tradespeople—but U.S. tariffs on lumber, agriculture, and manufacturing threaten local jobs and raise costs for consumers.
A Liberal government under Mark Carney will fight back by investing in made-in-Canada industries like mass timber and prefabricated housing, using Canadian softwood and local suppliers. These investments will strengthen supply chains and grow new markets at home.
We’ll offer over $25 billion in financing to innovative businesses, cut red tape, and support rural infrastructure so small businesses can expand.
As your MP, I’ll work to ensure these supports reach the farms, contractors, builders, and family-run shops across our riding. Our region has the talent and grit—all we need is a partner in Ottawa who’s ready to have our backs. Team Carney is that partner and I will ensure we have a strong voice at that table.
2. What’s your stance on party leadership—do you support their approach to Canada’s economy, and why?
I support Mark Carney because he brings global economic experience and deep compassion to the table—qualities we need right now.
His economic plan tackles Canada’s housing crisis by getting the federal government back into building homes and investing in affordable, sustainable construction.
He also knows how to stand strong against U.S. pressure, including tariffs, while protecting Canadian jobs. Carney’s plan to double housing construction and boost our green economy means more skilled trades and manufacturing jobs across the country—and here in Lanark–Frontenac.
I trust his leadership to deliver stability, growth, and fairness for rural Canadians, especially in communities that feel left behind. I’m proud to stand with a leader who believes in building both homes and hope.
3. Why should long-time Conservative voters in this riding take a chance on you—or your party—in this election?
After spending the past five years listening to residents across Lanark–Frontenac, one message comes through loud and clear: people want a Member of Parliament who works hard, respects their tax dollars, and understands the unique challenges facing our rural communities.
But after 25 years, we’ve been left with a representative who too often isn’t present when critical issues like grocery prices and supply chains are being debated in the House of Commons. A representative who made headlines for giving the finger to another MP and using profanity in Parliament. People here know when they’re paying for something and getting nothing in return.
Voters are ready for change—ready for new energy, fresh ideas, and someone who shows up. I’ve spent my life serving this community with heart, integrity, and hard work. I listen, I lead, and I get results.
Mark Carney’s plan focuses on building homes Canadians can afford, creating good jobs in growing industries, and strengthening rural infrastructure—not with empty slogans, but with real solutions.
If you’ve been voting the same way for years and feel like nothing’s changing, take a second look. I’ll put Lanark–Frontenac first—because you deserve a representative who works as hard as you do.
