Smiths Falls opens new Cataraqui Trailhead on Lombard Street

Cataraqui Trailhead improves access and connectivity for Smiths Falls trail users

The Town of Smiths Falls is proud to announce the official opening of its newest public amenity, the Cataraqui Trailhead, located on Lombard Street between Leisure Days RV Centre and Smiths Falls Kia. The new trailhead represents another important investment in the Town’s growing network of recreational trails and active transportation connections.

Developed by the Community Services Department with support from Public Works, the new trailhead provides parking for up to 20 vehicles and direct access to the Cataraqui Trail, one of Eastern Ontario’s most beloved pathways. The project was designed to improve safety and accessibility for trail users by providing a clearly marked, dedicated access point and reducing parking concerns and roadway congestion along nearby side streets.

“This new trailhead is about connection; connecting people to nature, to each other, and to the broader regional trail network,” said Stephanie Clark, Director of Community Services. “We are incredibly fortunate to be one of the official termini of the Cataraqui Trail, and this investment helps ensure residents and visitors can experience it safely and conveniently. It’s one more step in our commitment to enhancing the trails network that makes Smiths Falls such an exceptional place to live and explore.”

Managed by Cataraqui Conservation, the Cataraqui Trail spans 104 kilometres from Smiths Falls to Strathcona and is a year-round recreational trail. With this new access point, residents can more easily explore the scenic landscapes and heritage sites that contribute to the regional trail systems.

“We appreciate our partnership with the Town of Smiths Falls and their commitment to making the Cataraqui Trail a more accessible, visible and welcoming spot for those visiting the eastern part of the trail network,” added David Ellingwood, General Manager of Cataraqui Conservation.

The official opening ceremony for the Cataraqui Trailhead will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 24, 2025.

“This trailhead reflects our long-term vision for active living and tourism,” Clark added. “It’s exciting to think about where we can go next, not only along the Cataraqui Trail, but through continued improvements and connections throughout the entire Smiths Falls trail network.”
