Smiths Falls Day Hospice welcomes clients with programs, activities, and volunteer care
SMITHS FALLS — On September 23, the Hospice Hub officially opened a Day Hospice in Smiths Falls. The new facility, located at Westminster Presbyterian Church, will welcome clients every Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
“It’s very heartwarming to know that this resource is going to be here. And it’s going to make a real positive difference as people journey through those last difficult days,” said Mayor Shawn Pankow.
The space at Westminster has been fully renovated by Hospice Hub volunteers, who painted, donated furniture, coordinated the décor, and even created original artwork to brighten the walls.
“You know, there is no limit to the skills and expertise of the volunteers that we have. It is just so inspiring,” said Janet Douglas, Clinical Care Director with Hospice Hub.
Upon arrival at the Smiths Falls Day Hospice, clients are welcomed by volunteers, offered coffee or tea, and given time to settle in and chat. The program may include themed activities, crafts, board and card games, reading, hand or foot massages, and even manicures.
“We might have a talk, somebody who comes and talks about something that would be relevant,” added Douglas.
In partnership with the Falls Food Hub, the Smiths Falls Day Hospice will serve lunches prepared by the Food Hub throughout October. During that time, Food Hub staff will also mentor Hospice Hub volunteers in preparing meals in Westminster Church’s commercial kitchen. Starting in November, volunteers will begin cooking meals for clients on-site.
While space is limited, the Smiths Falls Day Hospice is currently accepting referrals. Individuals may refer themselves or a loved one by phone, email, or online registration—no referral from a healthcare provider is required. The service is intended for people with life-limiting or life-threatening illnesses—those navigating regular medical appointments or managing complex conditions. It also provides essential respite for caregivers.
“We can accommodate up to eight clients here in Smiths Falls, supported by four trained volunteers,” said Joanne Desormeaux, Day Hospice Coordinator.
For now, the Smiths Falls Day Hospice will operate one day per week. Plans are underway to open a second location in Perth by February or March.
“Then depending on the need in the community, if we needed to add another day, we certainly could. But first we’ve got to get this one filled up,” said Douglas.
Launched in 2023, Hospice Hub has made significant strides in just two years. In addition to the Smiths Falls Day Hospice, it offers advanced care planning, education, grief and bereavement programs, and in-home hospice support. Volunteers and nurse coordinators visit clients’ homes, providing advocacy and assistance navigating the healthcare system.
The organization is powered primarily by volunteers, with only a small number of paid staff.
“We have over 50 active volunteers now and we’re starting to train, about 20 more starting October 29th,” said Douglas, noting that those interested in volunteering can still sign up for the next training session by contacting the Hospice Hub in the coming days.
