Smiths Falls Police lay charges following false reports, traffic violations and domestic disputes

False report leads to public mischief charge

On September 13th, 2025 Smiths Falls Police Service received a 9-1-1 call alerting to a robbery in progress at a local convenience store. Members responded immediately to the area to learn the information received was unfounded. Further investigation led to the arrest of the complainant who intentionally reported the false information.

As a result of the investigation, 65 year old Stephen BETHUNE of Smiths Falls stands charged with public mischief (x1). The accused was later released with conditions and a scheduled court date.

Vehicle impounded and licence suspended in traffic violation

On September 17th, 2025 a member of the Smiths Falls Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle. The vehicle was measured travelling 152 km/h in a 80 km/h zone.

As a result of the traffic investigation, a 38 year old Montague Township resident stands charged with drive motor vehicle-perform stunt (x1) under the Highway Traffic Act. The driver also faces a 30-day licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impound.

Smiths Falls Police make two arrests following 9-1-1 call

On September 21st, 2025 SFPS received a 9-1-1 call for a possible disturbance at a residence. Members of the Smiths Falls Police responded to the scene to commence the investigation. Two suspects were taken into police custody.

As a result of the investigation, 36 year old Melissa BISONETTE of Smiths Falls is charged with failing to comply with their undertaking (x2) and failing to comply with their probation order (x2). The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing.

36 year old Cody LAMING of Smiths Falls was arrested on the strength of an outstanding bench warrant. The accused failed to appear in court on their outstanding charges from an April 2025 shoplift investigation. The accused was later released with conditions and a new court date.

Intimate Partner Violence investigation results in arrest

On September 24th, 2025 Smiths Falls Police received a 9-1-1 call alerting to an intimate partner violence dispute in progress. Members of the Smiths Falls Police responded to the scene to commence the investigation.

As a result of the investigation a 45 year old female from Smiths Falls has been arrested. The accused stands charged with assault (x1), assault cause bodily harm (x1) and mischief (x1). The accused was held in custody for a bail court hearing.

The charges in these matters have not been proven in court.
